Mamie Manneh, a meat eater was in trouble by eating monkey meat. Even since, her baptism in Liberia, she had eaten monkey meat. Now that she is in America, mainly in New York, she have to obey the laws and regulation that the government holds true to. The New York courts are charging her with meat smuggling of monkey meats. Her custom ways are getting in the way of a tribal customs that she practiced in her native homeland. Her case appeared to be an unusual case since it deals with religious values and cultural clash. Manneh was caught when some cardboard boxes was shipped to her from Guinea. The boxes was said to contain African dresses and smoked fish, but instead they had bushmeat.
Bushmeat is a word that West Africans referred to as "skulls, limbs and torsos of non-human primate species." Also, in the boxes was the leg of an antelope. U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service agents was on the case and went to talk to Manneh. Manneh gave them permission to conduct a search at her home. While searching through her garage, they found a small hairy arm which belongs to a monkey. Manneh said that the monkey was a gift to her from God. Manneh was being charge with violating importing procedures. Also, they were concern that these meat that was sent to her could contain diseases such as HIV and SARS. Now, she is awaiting trial. This is her second case against her. The first one was about Manneh trying to run a woman over with her car. She got a two-year sentence for that which she is serving. Now, with this case, she might have to serve more years in prison.
